So we'd like to take a moment, apropos of nothing, to highlight the genius that is Mission: Impossible -- Fallout. Why is the most recent entry in this aged series so damn good?
After all, by their sixth movie, Friday The 13th had already killed off and revived Jason Voorhees roughly 5, times. Perhaps what makes Fallout stand out in our nostalgia-filled culture in which every piece of intellectual property that ever appeared on a T-shirt gets a fresh-faced reinvention is that it's basically an anti-reboot.
Fallout is a two-and-a-half-hour repudiation of everything reboot culture is about. Sure, the original movie was a hip reinvention of a classic TV series featuring an attractive young cast and a hip new version of the theme song by the two more affordable members of U2.
But even that movie was oddly subversive, making the hero of the TV show into the film's villain. These days, we're constantly inundated with "fresh" takes on old franchises in which a cast of young characters take the reigns from established characters played by haggard actors you grew up watching, be it Spock, Han Solo, Rocky Balboa, or multiple geriatric Terminators.
The recent Mission: Impossible movies contrive similar character dynamics, only to reject them. When he was first cast, it was widely reported that he was " being groomed to replace Tom Cruise.
The Hollywood Reporter "Lemme just play this goofy Marvel character first. Gimme a year, maybe two, tops.
After all, Cruise was almost Why not hand off the franchise to someone 10 years his junior? Renner, it seemed, had become the understudy for movie super spies, set to take over for Ethan Hunt just as he did briefly for Jason Bourne.
But when Ghost Protocol came out, Renner's character is a pencil-pushing weenie, whereas Ethan Hunt scales the tallest building in the entire goddamn world.
Renner only existed to threaten Cruise, then make him look awesome by comparison. And since Matt Damon decided to do another Bourne movie, Renner was forced to turn to the douchey celebrity app industry.
In Fallout , they similarly pair Cruise with a hot young actor, Henry Cavill -- yeah, fucking Superman. Cavill also starred in his own movie update of a s spy show, The Man From U.
So this real-world threat to Cruise's career is introduced as a rival to Hunt. But even though Cavill may be younger, handsomer, and more ripped than Axl Rose's jeans, Hunt consistently shows us that he is the more valuable character.
Whether that's winning a fistfight with an enemy who bested Walker, even after he cocked his arm guns and magically sprouted more facial hair This in a scene that was accomplished not with green screen, but by actually having Cruise and a dude with a camera on his head jump out of an airplane.
Meaning that Tom Cruise saves the day not just by preventing a nuclear holocaust, but by eradicating any threat to his stardom. Young people dig the Mission: Impossible movies because they're full of amazing action, but older audiences love them because not unlike Star Trek they tap into a fundamental fear: One day you will die and be replaced.
Ethan's struggles against his strapping young rivals are a struggle against death itself. Unlike other franchise blockbusters, Fallout doesn't shy away from aging.
Rather, the film embraces it. Unlike the James Bond series, which swaps out its star for a younger model every decade or so, Ethan Hunt hasn't just gotten old, but accrued two decades' worth of emotional baggage.
His life has piled up with friends and loved ones, and they've become his ultimate weakness. In Fallout 's opening, Ethan's love for Luther, who he met way back in the first movie, is what leads to the plutonium getting stolen.
If it wasn't for that, Fallout would have been over before you've even had the chance to get annoyed at the teenagers sitting behind you.
Similarly, Ethan's ex-wife Julia is still in danger due to his work, and as we see in the opening dream sequence, those anxieties are consuming him.
And it's Ethan's fears that inspire the title. The villainous Solomon Lane spells it out. Paramount Pictures.
Paramount Pictures " See what I did there? In other words, Ethan's refusal to reboot, to deny the connections he's made in previous stories, means that he's made himself as vulnerable as, well, most human beings.
Ethan's past the first five movies aren't something to be shrugged off. The film suggests this with subtle nods to the earlier films, whether it's Ethan jumping across tall buildings like in Ghost Protocol Not only does this movie reference that moment, but it's how Ethan saves the world.
When he's fighting with Walker at the end, they end up on the side of a cliff, clinging to the same rope. But Ethan has a moment of clarity.
He doesn't need the rope. He knows how to mountain climb! So he loses the rope and lets Walker fall to his death.
Paramount Pictures "Next time, try doing all you own stunts for 25 years. And Ethan's contact, the White Widow, turns out to be the daughter of Max from the first movie.
Faust reappears and attempts to kill Lane to prove her loyalty to MI6, but the extraction is successful. Mitsopolis instructs Hunt to deliver both Lane and Faust to London.
Eventually, Hunt, the team, and Hunley trick Walker into admitting he is the real Lark and inform Sloane, who sends in a CIA unit to take everyone into custody for transfer to Washington, D.
However, the CIA unit had been infiltrated by the Apostles, and Walker orders the infiltrators to attack. Walker kills Hunley and escapes, after Hunt chases him across London.
As he departs for India with Lane, Walker instructs Hunt to turn himself in and admit that he is Lark or else Hunt's ex-wife Julia will be harmed.
The team deduces that Lane and Walker plan to detonate the remaining two nuclear bombs at a medical camp over the Siachen Glacier , contaminating the water supply of India , Pakistan , and China ; with a third of its population affected, the world will descend into an anarchy from which the Apostles hope a new world order will emerge.
The two bombs are linked by a failsafe. Any attempt to defuse one bomb without the detonator, automatically triggers the other. Upon arrival in Kashmir , Hunt discovers Julia and her new husband Erik are assigned to the medical camp, an arrangement made by Walker to increase the pressure on Hunt.
Lane programs the bombs' detonator with a minute countdown and gives it to Walker, choosing to remain behind with the bombs. Walker takes off, secretly pursued by Hunt while Dunn, Stickell, and Faust try to find and defuse the nuclear weapons.
Stickell attempts to deactivate the first bomb with Julia's help, but they are unable to without the detonator. Dunn and Faust find the second bomb and subdue Lane.
Following an aerial chase , Hunt uses a commandeered helicopter to ram Walker's helicopter out of the sky. After a fight on a cliff, Walker is killed.
Hunt then secures the detonator, allowing the team to deactivate the nukes. Julia tells Hunt that he has given her the best life, despite his commitment to the IMF.
Faust and the team join Hunt in celebration. Kristoffer Joner portrays Nils Delbruuk, a rogue nuclear weapons specialist.
Caspar Phillipson appears as a plutonium dealer. Wolf Blitzer makes a cameo appearance as himself, a disguise worn by Dunn. On August 19, , The Hollywood Reporter wrote that Paramount had halted pre-production on the film due to a dispute over salary between Cruise and the studio, as Cruise wanted to be paid equal to or more his fee for the Universal Pictures film The Mummy.
In February, McQuarrie revealed that the film would include more backstory to Ethan Hunt's personal life. Filming was slated to start in Paris on April 10, They also were allowed up to 50 helicopter landings per day.
Director Christopher McQuarrie said that he wanted the climax of the film to be set in a more "politically complex" location than New Zealand, so he chose to set this sequence in Kashmir.
In August , Cruise injured his right leg on the London set during filming. However, the injury and subsequent costs were offset by insurance, and did not count against the film's final budget.
Reshoots for Cavill's Justice League coincided with the schedule for Fallout , for which he had grown a mustache which he was contracted to keep while filming.
As the scene was to be set near sunset, they could only make one jump a day to try to get each shot. Balfe was confirmed by McQuarrie to be the composer for the film in April , replacing the previous composer Joe Kraemer.
The score has been praised by many critics, calling it an epic and inspiring score, with some powerful themes which are balanced with softer more sentimental themes; some also considered it being too " Nolan -esque", comparing it to scores by Hans Zimmer particularly The Dark Knight Rises.
The digital album was released through Paramount Music on July 14, The physical soundtrack was released later in the month by La-La Land Records.
The digital and Blu-ray releases include behind-the-scenes featurettes , a deleted scenes montage, an isolated score, and three commentary tracks.
It opened in 4, theaters, the most ever for the franchise and the seventh-widest release all time. The website's critical consensus reads, "Fast, sleek, and fun, Mission: Impossible — Fallout lives up to the 'impossible' part of its name by setting yet another high mark for insane set pieces in a franchise full of them.
Variety 's Peter Debruge called the film "the series' most exciting installment yet," saying, "McQuarrie clearly believes in creating coherent set pieces: His combat scenes are tense, muscular, and clean, shot and edited in such a way that the spatial geography makes sense.
Either way, Fallout is the film he's always promised us, and it is worth the wait. Robert Abele of TheWrap described Cruise as an "evergreen movie star with the daredevil heart of a stuntman" and that he "puts every ounce of effort he can into the long, hard work of maintaining a blockbuster franchise.
Kinnard of PopMatters wrote, "Though it lacks the gritty humanity of something like George Miller 's Mad Max: Fury Road , Mission: Impossible — Fallout is no less impressive in its dedication to character-driven action and practical special effects.
It's a dazzling, non-stop thriller that's sure to become an instant action classic. And this is what it cheerfully does. It was announced by Cruise on January 14, that the seventh and eighth Mission: Impossible films will be shot back-to-back with McQuarrie writing and directing both films for November 19, and November 4, release.

It's not just a token reference to Ethan's past, but a reminder of how goddamn old he is. Oddly enough, Ethan never really changes.
His arc is that he doesn't have an arc. His journey is a steadfast refusal to give up. Only the characters in his orbit seem to change, usually by coming to the realization that Ethan was right all along.
In Fallout , Ethan flirts with the idea of changing and becoming a darker, edgier version of himself. Paramount Pictures That's right, an action hero who's gone on long enough to have a midlife crisis.
But that's revealed to be a fantasy. He rejects a gritty reboot, and in the end succeeds thanks to good old-fashioned positivity.
He essentially gives himself a pep talk and doesn't succumb to negative thinking. That positivity is also what allows him to make those emotional ties that, while they make him a worse cold-blooded agent, also make his life meaningful.
Which is especially important in the broader context of aging and confronting death. Ethan saves the day, but the story ends not with an exciting Bond-like climax, but with what feels more like a near-death experience: a flash of light, followed by Ethan lying in a hospital bed, surrounded by friends.
The Wizard Of Oz , if it had also been full of skydiving and gunfights. It's a moving commentary on the meaning of life itself. To forge relationships, regardless of their frailty, isn't a weakness; it's what gives every moment a sense of purpose.

Ironically, the most entertaining element of all may be the star's advancing age; Cruise, well into his 50s, scores numerous laughs as the increasingly confused CIA agent, leaping into one spectacular stunt after another and then wishing he hadn't.
The thought crosses the mind: Where can it go from here? The answer is pretty much everywhere. It keeps on going and going, following one exciting sequence with another and then another.
Mick LaSalle. Mission: Impossible - Fallout is an unrelentingly consistent action movie, with not a single sequence wasted before the next big stunt.
Andrew Whalen. With the Resident Evil saga apparently complete and no further Mad Max adventures on the immediate horizon, Mission: Impossible must qualify as the best Hollywood action series now going.
Jake Wilson. Cruise will never win an Oscar for playing Hunt, but what he does in Mission: Impossible - Fallout is surely at least as taxing as, say, Leonardo DiCaprio's role in The Revenant, with the added obligation of making it look like fun.
Louise Rugendyke. The problem with constructing a movie as one long making-of sequence is that, if it's a movie as inert as this one, it doesn't so much answer the question "How was it made?
Richard Brody. To all moviegoers out there, your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to go out and see Mission Impossible - Fallout as soon as possible and on the biggest screen.
Matthew St. Mission: Impossible - Fallout represents the very best of the franchise. Kelechi Ehenulo. A blockbuster bonanza that genuinely feels as if it's tossing absolutely everything it has at the audience in an attempt to deliver pure, unadulterated escapism.
Tom Beasley. The physical proximity to each character and each movement is so minute, so aurally and visually sweeping, that Fallout is often slick as all hell.
Matt Cipolla. McQuarrie's eye for slick, flawless and stunning filmmaking paired with Cruise's slightly unhinged grip of action fodder has created spectacular, pure unadulterated blockbuster awesomeness.
Zehra Phelan. The manner in which [director Christopher McQuarrie] spaces out the thrills demonstrates perfect judgment.
